Day 17 of Tour de Fleece: Jacob/Columbia cross wool from Middleton, Tennessee. (washed/carded from 2019 raw fleece sample) 20g; 60 yds 2-ply Sport weight.
Day 18 of Tour de Fleece: Gulf Coast Native (washed/carded from raw fleece) from Alchemy Farms (Alabama): 29g; 85 yds 2-ply Sport weight.
🐑Tour de Fleece, Days 1-16 :
All from raw fleece (scoured/combed or carded)
11 sheep breeds: Icelandic, Shetland, Gulf Coast Native, American Tunis, Navajo Churro, California Red/Romeldale, CVM (California Variegated Mutant), CVM/Merino, Dorset Horn, Shropshire, & Hog Island.
Yarn yield = 3,133.4 yards of singles; 676 grams (23.85 ounces) of wool. 🧶
Day 16 (July 11) of Tour de Fleece:
Rustic-spun Shetland wool (washed/carded from raw fleece) 26g; 33.4 yds 2-ply Bulky weight.
This small sample was rough spun from some carded bits that weren’t conducive to consistent spinning, so I just treated it like bulky art yarn. I’ll probably use it in a woven piece for texture.
Day 15 of Tour de Fleece: CVM ewe wool from Cactus Hill Farm , Colorado (washed/carded from raw fleece sample) 20g; 70.4 yds 2-ply Fingering weight.
Day 14 of Tour de Fleece: CVM/Merino ewe wool from Cactus Hill Farm , Colorado (washed/carded from raw fleece) 34g; 120 yds 2-ply Fingering weight.
Last Saturday, the California Red/ Romeldale cross (ewe) raw fleece arrived from Mystic Rose Reds in Vale, Oregon.
Fleece was 3.5 pounds with a 3” staple length from a sheep named “Little Bit”.
I sampled about 23g of the fleece to get an idea of how it would work up…using it for my daily spinning for the Tour de Fleece.
I’ll go more in depth in another post, but I wanted to share pictures of what I have so far.
Day 13 of Tour de Fleece: California Red-Romeldale Cross wool ”Little Bit” from Mystic Rose Reds, Oregon (washed/carded from raw fleece) 23g; 47 yds 2-ply DK weight.
This is a sampling of the raw fleece that arrived last Saturday.
Day 12 of Tour de Fleece: Shetland wool “Percy” from Rock Mills Farm, Virginia (washed/carded from raw fleece) 47g; 115 yds 2-ply Sport weight.
Tour de Fleece, Day 10 (July 5): Shropshire wool (washed/carded from raw fleece) results from; 23 yds of 3-ply—70 yds singles (Bulky weight) yarn.
Tour de Fleece, Day 11 (July 6): American Tunis wool (washed/carded from raw fleece) results from 21g; 52 yds of 2-ply (Sport weight) yarn.
Tour de Fleece, Day 9: Hog Island wool (washed/carded from raw fleece) results from 57g; 99 yds of 2-ply (Bulky weight) yarn.
This was definitely “rustic spun” as my drum carded batt was minimally processed, leaving much to be desired while spinning. Next time, I’ll comb AND card before spinning.
