Day 14 of Tour de Fleece: CVM/Merino ewe wool from Cactus Hill Farm , Colorado (washed/carded from raw fleece) 34g; 120 yds 2-ply Fingering weight.
California Red x Romeldale raw fleece arrival
Last Saturday, the California Red/ Romeldale cross (ewe) raw fleece arrived from Mystic Rose Reds in Vale, Oregon.
Fleece was 3.5 pounds with a 3” staple length from a sheep named “Little Bit”.
I sampled about 23g of the fleece to get an idea of how it would work up…using it for my daily spinning for the Tour de Fleece.
I’ll go more in depth in another post, but I wanted to share pictures of what I have so far.

Tour de Fleece 2021: Days 10 & 11
Tour de Fleece, Day 10 (July 5): Shropshire wool (washed/carded from raw fleece) results from; 23 yds of 3-ply—70 yds singles (Bulky weight) yarn.
Tour de Fleece, Day 11 (July 6): American Tunis wool (washed/carded from raw fleece) results from 21g; 52 yds of 2-ply (Sport weight) yarn.
Tour de Fleece 2021: Day 9
Tour de Fleece, Day 9: Hog Island wool (washed/carded from raw fleece) results from 57g; 99 yds of 2-ply (Bulky weight) yarn.
This was definitely “rustic spun” as my drum carded batt was minimally processed, leaving much to be desired while spinning. Next time, I’ll comb AND card before spinning.
Another conservation breed fleece bought as part of the SE2SE program from Silver Bullet Farm LLC.
Tour de Fleece 2021: Day 7
Tour de Fleece, Day 7: American Tunis wool (washed/carded from raw fleece) results from 38g; 97 yds of 2-ply (DK weight) yarn.
This wool came from an American Tunis raw fleece from Solace Farms in Coalmont, Tennessee.
Tour de Fleece 2021: Day 6
Day 6 of Tour de Fleece: Navajo Churro wool (washed/carded from raw fleece) 48g; 97 yds 2-ply DK weight.
Today I decided to sample the Navajo Churro raw partial fleece I bought as part of the SE2SE (Shave ‘em to Save ‘em) project. This light silver fleece came from Mesa Weavings in Colorado.
Tour de Fleece 2021: Day 5
Day 5 of Tour de Fleece: Shetland wool (washed/carded from raw fleece) 53g; 98 yds 2-ply Worsted weight.
This wool came from a Shetland ram named Macchiato in 2019 (Ballyhoo Farm, Kentucky). I had washed his fleece back in 2019, but hadn’t sampled it because we were in the middle of a move.
Tour de Fleece 2021: Day 4
Tour de Fleece, Day 4: 38g yielded 94 yds (2-ply, DK weight)
*Shetland wool from “Eowyn” the ewe’s 2019 raw fleece from Ballyhoo Farm in Bagdad, KY.
